Prior to applying to the police for a permit, you must first identify the type of airsoft gun you are using, as certain airsoft guns are deemed imitation firearms and require special permits in the state of New Jersey. An airsoft gun can be pronounced an imitation firearm if its exterior is a replica of a real firearms, or is colored other than white, black, blue or red.
To be classed as an imitation firearm, the airsoft gun must:
- Designed to resemble a real weapon
- Its primary color is not white, black, blue or red
- The muzzle velocity of the gun is over 400 feet per second
If the airsoft gun respects this criteria, then the owner must apply for an additional permit from the State Police for rifles and handguns. For shotguns, then a permit from the Fish and Game Council is required.
